FAQ
Choosing the right therapist can be hard. Does your child need an assessment? therapy? or something else? At CALM DOWN KIDS, we are dedicated to helping your child succeed and committed to helping you find the right services, even if it's not with us. Below please find answers to our most commonly asked questions.
Can I use my insurance?
CDK doesn't work with any insurance companies. This means you have to pay for our services yourself when you use them. Every month, we'll give you a superbill, which is a special receipt that you can send to your insurance company to get some money back. But remember, your insurance might not pay you back the full amount.
How much do services cost?
CDK has an equitable pricing system that helps us offer therapy to families who might not be able to afford it otherwise. We have four different price levels to fit different budgets. Please remember, if you choose the lowest price when you can actually afford a higher one, you are taking away the chance for someone who really needs the financial help. See Santa Clara Pricing List.
How long will services last?
How long your child needs therapy or an assessment depends on what they need. We usually ask for at least 3 months of therapy to see improvements in your child and family. If your child has been through a lot or is treatment-resistant, they might need to stay in therapy for 6 months to a year. Assessments can take between 3 to 10 hours to finish.
What does therapy look like?
Your child's therapist will work with both you and your child to make a special treatment plan that fits your goals and uses proven methods. We use a variety of modalities such as CBT, DBT, Play Therapy, and more. We work with children who have Autism, ADHD, Depression, Anxiety, Trauma, Tourettes, Selective Mutism, low self-esteem, unhealthy peer relationships, and so much more.
Will I be expected to participate?
At CDK, we do things a bit differently by inviting parents to watch and/or participate in their child's therapy sessions when appropriate. We also have monthly check-ins and coaching sessions for parents. We only work with families where the parents also want to learn and grow alongside their children.
Do you work with kids that have...?
Yes, all of our therapists have experience working with young kids and teenagers with different issues. We often help children who have trouble controlling their emotions and behaviors. We focus on what works best for each child and adjust the treatment to fit their needs.
Does my child need an assessment?
At CDK, we offer many types of evaluations for kids from birth to 16 years old. These assessments can help us understand your child's needs better, guide their therapy, and get extra help at school. A psychological assessment looks at your child's overall well-being, while school assessments focus on how they are doing as a student.
What's your availability for scheduling?
At our Campbell location, we have therapy appointments after school and on weekends to fit busy schedules, while assessment appointments are in the morning. Schedule a call with us to be matched with a clinician whose availability meets your schedule.
Is there anything you can't help me with?
Because eating disorders need special medical care, CDK doesn't treat these cases, but we can help you find a specialist nearby. We don't give out medication, but we can refer you to someone who does. CDK also doesn't handle high-conflict divorces or other court-related issues. We don't do therapy or assessment for couples or adults.
